How to Source Clothing Manufacturers: Five Steps

If you are asking how to source clothing manufacturers for the first time, this is the sequence we recommend.

Step What to Do
1. Define the product Fix your garment type, fabric, quantity, and target price, so quotes are comparable
2. Shortlist countries Compare duty, lead time, and strengths using the country guides in section B
3. Find and vet factories Use platforms, trade fairs, and buying offices, then verify certificates and references
4. Sample and inspect Approve a production sample, and agree an inspection standard before bulk
5. Plan logistics Agree the Incoterm, documents, and landed cost before you pay a deposit

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to start global apparel sourcing?

Define your product and target price, shortlist two or three countries on duty, lead time, and product fit, vet factories through platforms, trade fairs, or a buying office, and approve a production sample before bulk.

Which clothing manufacturing countries are best for cotton knitwear?

India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Turkey, and Cambodia are the main options. India is strong in cotton quality and special finishing, Bangladesh in volume basics, Vietnam in technical knits, and Turkey in speed to Europe.

How do I import clothes from India?

Choose a manufacturer, agree an Incoterm such as FOB or DDP, collect the commercial invoice, packing list, shipping document, and any certificate of origin, and confirm the duty and VAT for your market with a customs broker. Sections A and B of this apparel import export guide cover the procedures.

How do tariffs and trade agreements change where I should source?

They change landed cost. For example, Indian garments enter the UK duty free since July 2026 and the EU is expected to follow from 2027, while US rates have changed repeatedly, so compare countries on landed cost, not factory price.

Is it better to buy direct or use a sourcing agent?

Sourcing clothing manufacturers directly gives control and lower cost when you can vet factories yourself, while an agent or buying office adds local checks and logistics. Section E compares the options.
