The best country to manufacture t-shirts depends on what you are making, how many you need, and where you are selling. The lowest factory price is rarely the lowest total cost once fabric, duty, lead time, and quality are added in. This guide compares the six main t-shirt manufacturing countries from a factory’s point of view, with our own figures from Tirupur, and shows how to choose for your brand.
Where Are Most T-Shirts Made?
Most t-shirts sold in Europe and North America are made in Asia, mainly in China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Cambodia. Each country has built its position on a different strength: some on scale and low labour cost, others on a complete cotton supply chain or trade agreements with major markets. Knowing this is useful, but the more practical question for a brand is which of these countries suits its own product and volumes.
T-Shirt Manufacturing Countries Compared
| Country | Main Strength for T-Shirts | Watch Out For | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | Own cotton and a full yarn-to-garment chain in clusters like Tirupur | Longer lead times; quality varies between factory tiers | Quality cotton, organic, and value-added finishes |
| Bangladesh | Very large scale in basic knits and highly competitive prices | Relies on imported cotton and yarn; high minimums | Very large programmes of basic tees |
| Vietnam | Efficient factories and trade agreements such as EVFTA and CPTPP | Imports much of its fabric; higher costs than South Asia | Synthetic and performance tees |
| China | The most complete supply chain and fast development | Rising costs and trade tensions with some markets | Technical fabrics and complex garments |
| Pakistan | Domestic cotton and strong knitting capacity | Economic and energy instability | Cotton basics at scale |
| Cambodia | Low labour cost for sewing | Imports most fabric; limited upstream supply chain | Simple sewn basics at volume |
Why the Lowest Factory Price Is Not the Lowest Cost
A t-shirt’s FOB price is only the price at the port of export. Before you can compare countries fairly, you need to add sea freight, import duty in your market, testing, and the cost of carrying stock through a longer or shorter lead time. You also need to account for quality: a lower price with more rejects or returns is not a saving. Duty alone can change the answer. Bangladesh currently has duty-free access to the EU as a least-developed country, while Indian t-shirts entering the UK pay zero duty with valid proof of origin since the India-UK trade agreement came into force on 15 July 2026. US duty rates on garments have changed several times recently, so check the current rate for your product before you compare. Is Tirupur More Expensive Than Bangladesh?
For a very large order of a plain, basic tee, a Bangladeshi factory will often quote a lower FOB price than a Tirupur one, because its business is built on scale. The picture changes as soon as the product asks for more: organic or long-staple cotton, a particular GSM or knit structure, garment washes, specialty prints, or quantities in the hundreds rather than the tens of thousands per style. India grows its own cotton, and Tirupur has spinning, knitting, dyeing, printing, and garmenting within a short distance, so these requirements add less cost and less time there. For reference, our own FOB range is roughly $2 to $3.50 for a basic cotton t-shirt and $3 to $4.50 for organic cotton, depending on fabric, print, and quantity. Our guides to the most common t-shirt GSMs and single jersey fabric explain the fabric choices that drive these numbers.
Which Country Makes the Best T-Shirts?
No single country makes the best t-shirts for every brand. Which country makes the best t-shirts for you depends on the fibre, the finish, and the volume. Cotton tees with a premium hand feel, organic fabric, or detailed washes and prints suit India. Very large runs of plain basics suit Bangladesh. Polyester, performance, and technical tees suit Vietnam and China. If you sell in the UK, India’s zero-duty access strengthens the case further, and our page for t-shirt manufacturers for UK brands covers that market. Our recommendation
The best country to manufacture t-shirts for your brand is the one that fits your fabric, volume, and market. Shortlist two countries that suit your fabric and volume, then compare two or three factories in each on a landed-cost basis, using the same tech pack and a production sample. For cotton tees with quality, organic, or value-added requirements, include Tirupur in that shortlist. Our knit orders start at 300 pieces per colour per style and take 75 to 90 days from purchase order to shipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best country to manufacture t-shirts?
It depends on the product and volume. Bangladesh suits very large runs of basic tees, India suits quality cotton, organic, and value-added t-shirts, and Vietnam and China suit synthetic and performance tees. Compare countries on landed cost, including freight and duty in your market.
Where are most t-shirts made?
Most t-shirts sold in Europe and North America are made in Asia, mainly China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Cambodia.
Is manufacturing in Tirupur more expensive than Bangladesh?
For very large orders of plain basic tees, Bangladesh often quotes a lower FOB price. For organic cotton, specific fabrics, washes, prints, or moderate quantities, Tirupur is usually competitive or better value, because India grows its own cotton and has the full supply chain in one cluster.
What costs should I compare between countries?
Compare the FOB price plus sea freight, import duty in your market, testing, lead time and stock-holding cost, minimum order quantities, and the likely rate of quality issues. Duty differences alone can change which country is best for you.
How much does a t-shirt cost to make in India?
At The Synerg, a basic cotton t-shirt is roughly $2 to $3.50 FOB and an organic cotton t-shirt roughly $3 to $4.50 FOB, depending on fabric, print, and quantity.
