Bulk t shirt manufacturers are asked one question more than any other: what does a t-shirt cost to make? The answer is a range, because t-shirts are such a wide category, and fabric, weight, print, and quantity each move the price. This guide gives indicative t-shirt manufacturing cost in India at FOB, answers what it costs to make a t-shirt in India, explains what drives it up or down, and shows how to get a quote you can actually plan around, based on more than 20 years of costing t-shirts in Tirupur for export.
Estimated T-Shirt Manufacturing Cost in India (FOB)
| T-Shirt Type | Indicative FOB Cost (USD per piece) | What Drives It |
|---|---|---|
| Basic cotton tee, around 180 GSM | $2.00 to $3.50 | Combed or carded yarn, print, quantity |
| Organic cotton tee | $3.00 to $4.50 | Certified yarn and processing |
| Polyester-blend performance tee | $2.50 to $4.00 | Fabric blend and finishes such as wicking |
| Premium cotton tee | $5.00 to $7.00 | Supima or Pima, heavy GSM, washes, detailing |
These are indicative FOB ranges, not quotes. The same “basic tee” can sit at either end of its range depending on the specification, which is exactly why the drivers below matter more than the headline number.
What Drives the Cost to Make a T-Shirt in India
The t shirt production cost breakdown below covers the seven components every bulk t shirt manufacturer prices into a quote.
1. Fabric and GSM
Fabric is the single largest cost in a t-shirt. The fibre, the yarn quality, and the weight all move the price: a 160 GSM carded cotton tee uses less yarn, and lower-priced yarn, than a 220 GSM combed cotton tee, and organic, Supima, or Pima cotton adds cost at the yarn stage before anything is knitted. Choosing the right weight is often the fastest way to control cost without losing quality, as our guide to the GSM weights used for t-shirts explains.
2. Cutting, Sewing, and Labour
The cut, make, and trim cost depends on how complex the garment is. A basic crew neck is quick to sew; a tee with a contrast rib, side slits, a pocket, or flatlock seams takes more operations and more time. Faster delivery dates can also add cost if the line has to be reorganised.
3. Printing and Embellishment
Decoration is where a t-shirt’s cost changes most. A one-colour chest print adds little; a multi-colour front and back print, puff ink, embroidery, or an all-over print adds much more. The number of colours in a screen print matters, because each colour needs its own screen and pass.
4. Washing and Finishing
Bio wash, garment dyeing, and vintage washes add a processing cost, and they also use a little more fabric, because washed garments need a shrinkage allowance built into the pattern. We plan a 5% shrinkage allowance for washed t-shirts, so the fabric cost rises slightly as well as the wash cost.
5. Order Quantity
Quantity spreads the fixed costs, sampling, screens, pattern making, and line set-up, across more pieces. Our standard minimum is 300 pieces per colour per style; above that, every step up in quantity usually lowers the per-piece price, which is why bulk t shirt manufacturers quote tiered prices for different volumes.
6. Labels, Trims, and Packing
Woven or printed neck labels, care labels, hang tags, and packing all add small amounts that are easy to forget. A plain polybag costs little; branded tissue, recycled packaging, or individual boxes add more.
7. Quality, Compliance, and Testing
Export quality t shirt manufacturer standards, such as AQL 2.5 inspection, certified organic processing, and third-party lab tests, carry a cost, but they are what keep a brand’s product consistent and compliant in its market.
FOB Price vs Landed Cost
The prices above are FOB, which covers the finished, packed t-shirts loaded at an Indian port such as Chennai or Tuticorin. Your landed cost adds international freight, insurance, import duty, and delivery to your warehouse. Import duty varies by destination and trade agreement, so two brands buying the same t-shirt at the same FOB can land it at very different costs. If you are comparing sourcing countries on landed cost, our guide to the lowest-cost countries to make a t-shirt sets out the comparison.
What About Sampling Cost?
Sampling is separate from the bulk price. We charge samples at 2 to 3 times the estimated FOB price, and the full sampling cost is refunded against the second bulk production order, subject to the minimum. Proto-samples ship within 21 to 25 days of receiving the tech pack. Our guide to how much clothing samples cost explains why samples are priced this way.
How to Get an Accurate T-Shirt Quote
A vague request gets a vague price. To get a quote you can plan around, give the manufacturer:
the fabric, fibre, and GSM; the fit and size range; the neck, sleeve, and any detailing; the print method, number of colours, size, and position; any wash or finish; label and packing requirements; the quantity per colour per style; the destination and preferred Incoterm (FOB, CIF, or DDP); and your target delivery date. A tech pack with these details lets a factory cost each component rather than guess, and it is the fastest way to compare quotes on a like-for-like basis.
Where in India T-Shirts Are Made
Tirupur in Tamil Nadu is India’s cotton knitwear cluster and the main source of export t-shirts, with yarn, knitting, dyeing, printing, and stitching within a short distance of each other. Ludhiana in Punjab is strong in winterwear and basics, and Surat in Gujarat is competitive in poly-cotton and synthetic fabrics. For cotton t-shirts, Tirupur’s concentration of specialists is what keeps both cost and lead time under control.
Our recommendation
Use the FOB ranges above as a starting point, then send a full specification for a component-by-component quote. The biggest savings usually come from choosing the right GSM and print, not from squeezing the stitching cost. We produce t-shirts from a minimum of 300 pieces per colour per style, shipping FOB, CIF, or DDP, including for US brands through our US t-shirt manufacturing service. Send us your tech pack for an itemised quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the t-shirt manufacturing cost in India?
A basic 180 GSM cotton t-shirt typically costs around $2.00 to $3.50 per piece FOB in India. Organic cotton tees run around $3.00 to $4.50, polyester-blend performance tees around $2.50 to $4.00, and premium cotton tees around $5.00 to $7.00. These are indicative ranges that vary with fabric, print, finish, and quantity.
What is the biggest cost in making a t-shirt?
Fabric is the largest cost component. The fibre, yarn quality, and GSM set most of the price, which is why choosing the right weight and yarn is the most effective way to control cost.
Does ordering more t-shirts reduce the price?
Yes. Larger quantities spread fixed costs such as sampling, screens, and line set-up across more pieces, so the per-piece price usually falls as volume rises. Our standard minimum is 300 pieces per colour per style.
What is the difference between FOB and landed cost?
FOB covers the finished, packed t-shirts loaded at the Indian port. Landed cost adds international freight, insurance, import duty, and local delivery. Import duty depends on the destination country and any trade agreement.
How much does a t-shirt sample cost?
We charge samples at 2 to 3 times the estimated FOB price, and the sampling cost is refunded against the second bulk production order, subject to the minimum order quantity.
