Top Clothing Manufacturers in France: Factories, Ateliers and When to Look Overseas

Clothing manufacturers in France are few compared with fifty years ago, but the ones that remain are among the most skilled in Europe. They are concentrated in a handful of regions: knitwear around Lille in the north and in Brittany and Normandy in the west, denim in the south, and couture and small-run workshops in and around Paris. This list covers the main manufacturers producing in France today, what each is known for, and when a French factory or an overseas partner is the better choice for your brand.

The short answer: The best-known names include Lemahieu, Armor-Lux, Saint James, Le Minor, Petit Bateau, Atelier Tuffery, and 1083, alongside contract workshops such as Loom France and French Tex. French production suits premium, heritage, and made-in-France ranges with smaller runs. For larger volumes of cotton knitwear at a lower landed cost, many French brands also work with overseas manufacturers.

1. Lemahieu

Founded in 1947 near Lille, Lemahieu is one of the last hosiery and knitwear manufacturers in northern France. It knits, dyes, and sews under one roof, producing t-shirts, sweatshirts, and underwear for its own label and for private-label clients, which makes it one of the few French factories set up to produce for other brands.

2. Armor-Lux

Established in Quimper in 1938, Armor-Lux is famous for its Breton striped tops and also produces workwear and uniforms for large organisations. It knits and dyes in Brittany, with some lines made in partner workshops around the Mediterranean.

3. Saint James

Making Breton stripes and fisherman sweaters in Normandy since 1889, Saint James is one of France’s best-known heritage knitwear manufacturers.

4. Le Minor

Based in Guidel in Brittany, Le Minor makes striped shirts and knitwear on traditional circular knitting machines.

5. Petit Bateau

A long-established children’s wear house associated with Troyes, Petit Bateau is known for soft cotton knitwear for babies and children.

6. Atelier Tuffery

A family denim workshop in Lozère in southern France, Atelier Tuffery is one of the few remaining makers of French denim jeans.

7. 1083

1083 produces jeans and casualwear in workshops across France, with a focus on local supply chains.

8. Loom France

A Paris-based contract manufacturer, Loom France is one of the options for clothing manufacturers in Paris France for brands that want small-run production close to the city.

9. French Tex

A Lyon-based contract manufacturing business offering clothing production for brands.

Bespoke Clothing Manufacturers in France

For couture and premium ready-to-wear, France also has many small ateliers, especially in and around Paris, that make sample collections, small runs, and made-to-measure pieces. These ateliers offer exceptional craftsmanship, but they work in small quantities at premium prices, so they suit luxury and limited collections rather than core ranges. Look for the Origine France Garantie label or the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label when you want verified French production.

When to Use a Clothing Factory in France, and When to Look Overseas

French production is the right choice when the made-in-France story is part of your brand, when you need very small runs close to the European market, or when you produce heritage styles such as Breton knitwear. Costs are higher than in Asia, capacity is limited, and many French garment manufacturers in France already work close to full capacity. For cotton knitwear in larger volumes, many French brands work with overseas partners, and the economics are about to improve: the India-EU trade agreement, concluded in January 2026, is expected to bring zero duty on Indian garments into the EU from early 2027. Our guide to importing clothes from India covers duty and shipping, and our comparison of domestic vs offshore production explains the trade-offs.

If you are looking overseas

The Synerg, Tirupur, India

For French and European brands looking for an overseas manufacturer, we make cotton knitwear in Tirupur, India’s knitwear capital: t-shirts for French brands, hoodies for French labels, kidswear for French brands, and GOTS-certified organic ranges through our certified partners. We run our own factory with 100 sewing machines, start knit orders at 300 pieces per colour per style, take 75 to 90 days from purchase order to shipment, and inspect every order to AQL 2.5.

Our recommendation

Use clothing manufacturers in France for heritage, premium, and made-in-France lines in smaller runs, and an overseas partner for core cotton knitwear at volume. Plan EU orders for 2027 around the India-EU agreement to benefit from zero duty, and compare every option on landed cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the main clothing manufacturers in France?

Lemahieu, Armor-Lux, Saint James, Le Minor, Petit Bateau, Atelier Tuffery, and 1083, along with contract workshops such as Loom France in Paris and French Tex in Lyon.

Are there garment manufacturers in France that make private label?

Yes, though fewer than in Asia. Lemahieu produces for private-label clients, and contract workshops such as Loom France and French Tex manufacture for brands, usually in smaller runs at premium prices.

Where are clothing manufacturers in Paris France?

Paris and its suburbs host many small ateliers and contract workshops, such as Loom France, that produce samples, small runs, and premium ready-to-wear.
